The City of San Marcos is the county seat of Hays County and home to Texassanmarcos2.jpg State University. San Marcos is located on Interstate Highway 35, about 25 miles south of Austin. San Marcos was named after Alonso de Leon's men who found the River San Marcos in 1689. It was also the site of first Spanish attempt at colonization before it became the center of Anglo-American settlement in the area in 1755. The historical Hays County Courthouse square was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. The Square achieves significance for its rich and varied architectures. The Texas Historical Commission (THC) and the National Trust for Historic Preservation recently recognized San Marcos as one of the 53 National Main Street Cities in Texas. Today, San Marcos Economic Development is continuing its ongoing projects of coordinating and developing its strategic plan for the Greater San Marcos Area. San Marcos´ spring-fed San Marcos River provides a refreshing playground for swimming, canoeing, tubing and even riding a glass bottom boat at the Aquarena Research Center.

Voted to be the "Third-Best Place to Shop in the World" by ABC´s The View, located right off IH-35 at Exit 200, is the San Marcos Prime Outlets. It is the largest outlet shopping destination in Texas and the largest in the world.
